Questions about this conversion
Which sizes are inside the ICO?
16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels. 256 is stored the way the ICO format requires, with a width byte of 0. Google’s favicon guidance wants a multiple of 48, and 48 is included.
Should the source be square?
Yes for a favicon. A wide PNG is scaled to fit each square size, so it will look squashed. Crop it to a square first if the shape matters.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. Each size is a PNG inside the ICO, so transparent pixels stay transparent.
